When God Became White: Dismantling Whiteness for a More Just Christianity

whiteness has infiltrated much of North American culture, economics, and politics, as well as religion. For Christians, whiteness has caused great damage in reinforcing the notion of a white male God, teaching that white men are at the top of the social ladder and people of color, especially woman of color, are at the bottom of the hierarchy. My goal is to work toward reimagining a nonwhite and a nongendered God—a God who can help us build a more just society, faith community, and loving church. Spirit God will teach us that everyone is equal and everyone, regardless of gender, race, and ethnicity, is welcomed into the body of Christ. But how do we incorporate these new practices into our lives so we can move toward a nonwhite and nongendered God who embraces all people? We reimagine God by rethinking and rewriting worship and liturgy, reconsidering discipleship, and reshaping our community of faith.
