The sudden jolt of longing in my heart had me gripping my chest for reasons I didn’t understand.
He was beautiful. Darkness seemed to be his only companion. A toxic companion that poisoned any brightness crossing his path if he allowed it too close. Thankfully, he seemed to be able to hold it at arm’s length before it consumed him completely. Those eyes spoke a language of their own—and somehow, I knew it on an intuitive level.
But some pain couldn’t be restrained. It would always come back to claim its due, forcing you to face your demons. I fucking hated it.
In a tone softer than I typically used, I said, “I know you could if you needed, but I’m offering to take the load off you. So, let me.”
“Don’t tempt me, little savage,” he growled, his eyes meeting mine as he bit his bottom lip. “I don’t think you can handle my appetite.”
“You taste like oblivion. I’m forever lost to you.”
