“Take all the time in the world,” he calls out. “You’re worth the wait.” “Do you use that line on every girl?” “You know there aren’t any girls.”
It might be below freezing outside, but her laugh is warm. Inviting. Sunshine in human form, and one of my favorite noises.
I’ve never been distracted on the field before, but Lacey never fails to catch my eye.
and I press my lips against hers, kissing my best friend in front of seventy thousand people without a damn in the world, just as snowflakes start to fall from the sky.
“Because you’re my friend, and I care about you. I want to know all about your dreams, Lacey.”
“I’ll tell you anything you want to know.” “Anything?” “Anything.”
I care about you, okay? A whole fucking lot.
My eyes prick with tears, and I dip my chin. “You care about me?” I ask. My voice wobbles, and I sniff. “A whole fucking lot?”
“Yeah, Lacey girl,”
“I do. Is that okay with you?”
“Yes.” I nod. “That’s okay with me. I care about you, too.”
“I’m your boyfriend, Lacey,”
“Fake boyfriend,”
I’m going to make sure she’s fed and she’s safe and she’s happy. I’m going to buy her what she wants and spoil the shit out of her.
“Your smile is my favorite smile.”
“That’s a Lacey smile.”
“It’s unique and special. Just like you.”
“I like this picture a lot. Can you send me a copy?”
“I have photos in my wallet of the people I care about. Maggie and Aiden. Maven. My family. I don’t have one of you. This one would be perfect.”
“Thank you for being my friend. Thank you for… for being a safe place for me. Thank you for letting me be here. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
“Why do you call me Lacey girl? It’s the only pet name you’ve ever used twice.”
“Because I can tell you don’t hate it. And because you’re my girl.”
“A way to get me to remind you that you’re mine?”
“Am I yours?”
I know you’re fiercely independent, which is a trait I love about you. You can fight your own demons and slay your own dragons, but I’m here, too.
“Anyone who doesn’t see what’s beneath the jersey and headset is missing out. You are the most perfect person I’ve ever met, and I’m so lucky to have you in my corner.”
She’s my favorite person in the entire world.
“I’m lucky to have you in my life, Lacey girl. Thank you for being my friend. Thank you for seeing me. You make me happy.”
“You make me happy too, Shawn. I’m always going to see you, even when you have trouble seeing yourself. In your dark moments, I’ll be there. Don’t ever forget that.”
That’s exactly what Lacey does for me; she reminds me life isn’t always an uphill climb. Eventually the hard things get easy, a steady descent I can take at my own pace.
I’ve massively fucked up, a mistake I can’t undo. I didn’t make other men not good enough for her. She made other women not good enough for me. Lacey ruined me, all while I was trying not to ruin her.
“You win every time. It’s not even close. Even with a billion choices, it would still be you.”
“I like her very, very much,” I say. “She’s my favorite person in the entire world.”
“The entire world?” Eliza wrinkles her nose. “But there are a lot of people. You haven’t met them all.”
“Doesn’t matter. She’s still m...

Shawn does take care of me. It was hard to give over that power when I’ve been doing just fine for so long, but he’s been careful with my heart, too. He carries it around in a steel box so nothing can ever touch it.
“Wow,” she whispers, and I look down at her. “It’s beautiful.” “Yeah,” I agree, but I’m busy studying every inch of her face.
And I would tell you I love you. Very much and very often, because I do. I do love you, Lacey. I don’t want to let you go just yet. Can I keep you a little while longer?”
“How much longer?” I ask. “How does forever sound?”
