“It looks so real,” she murmurs. “It does,” I say, keeping my voice level. Because it is, I should say, but I don’t. If I did, I’d have to explain why I bought a three carat pear-shaped diamond ring for my fake fiancée. And since my main answer is I don’t know, it’s probably not the best time to reveal that detail.
“If you were words on a page, you’d be what they call fine print.” I groan. “No, that one is worse.”
“I can’t go out tonight on account of being too busy dying of embarrassment,” I
“How do you know unless you try?” he asks as we walk to a hightop table. “The same way I know that murder isn’t for me.”
“So when I pulled you into my scheme and made you my fake fiancé…” I grin. “Second best day of my life, next to today.” Her look is admonishing at first, but it quickly softens into something sweeter. “It’s been real for you this whole time?” she asks, vulnerability peeking through her tone. “Yes,” I answer without hesitation. She silently twists her engagement ring. “I don’t expect us to stay engaged, but I would like the chance to date you. To spoil you and cherish you until you’re ready for that step.” She slowly lifts her gaze. “I’d really like that.
“Do you have any other secrets I should know about?” I ask him. “Well…” he trails off. I narrow my eyes. “I like the marshmallows in lucky charms best. I don’t know why anyone would like just the cereal, it tastes like cardboard.” I laugh, dropping my forehead against his chest. I knew there was no way the marshmallows weren’t his favorite. “Of all things, why did you lie about that?” “To make you think we were perfect for each other, of course,” he jokes.
