Indians were not entirely hapless victims. Most slaves were prisoners of war, seized in intertribal conflicts and sold by enemy Indian groups to the English in exchange for guns, pots, and axes. Nonetheless, the simple existence of the Indian slave trade—thousands of native men and women working in bondage for Europeans—was a testament to Indians’ catastrophic loss of power and status.
