Paradoxically, this book about life before Columbus spends more than a little time discussing life after Columbus. There are two reasons for this. First, many indigenous cultures had no writing, and so much of the best information about them comes from the chronicles of the first Europeans who saw them. Colonial accounts are distorted by cultural myopia, to be sure, but they are still eyewitness descriptions of other ways of life.
