“She’s the one,” he announces to his men. “I want her.”
“Kingdoms rise and fall for you. Because of you.”
Love is weakness, an exploitable flaw.
His eyes drop to my chin again. “You handled that hit well. Like a man.” “Is that supposed to be a compliment? The last thing I want is to be hairy and stupid.”
“I conquered a kingdom and found a treasure.” His voice turns gravelly, low. “I won’t let you go. Not now. Not ever.”
A muscle ticks in his jaw before his eyes drift down, taking in the rest of me. His expression reminds me of a starving man who just stumbled upon his next meal. Focused. Hungry. Ready to pounce.
“You’re too young to be so cynical.”
Maybe I’ll trust him to fight my monsters while I sleep.
His voice is fierce in my ear. “You’re mine now, Cat. Don’t you dare die on me.”
“So I can’t protect you if you won’t tell me the truth!” He actually growls at me. Loud. “I want to protect you, Cat.”
Leaning down, he lightly drops his forehead against mine. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
The raw, almost desperate sound that rises in his throat makes me feel powerful in a way that has nothing to do with magic, or knives, or knowledge.
His voice drops to a low, ardent growl. “I would have come for you.” His strong arms are a fierce pressure around me. His ragged exhale warms my neck, making me want to curl into him. “When you jumped, I thought I’d lost you.”
He’s intense, hungry, and yet surprisingly gentle. No one has ever been careful with me before. I don’t need careful, but something inside me still cracks, a fissure created by this earthquake of a man.
His tongue swirls against my skin, and I gasp. His voice rough with passion, he rasps, “You’re living fire. I burn.”
“You were made for me. I know it.”
‘Love nothing and no one can hurt you.’
“My kingdom’s treasure. My treasure. So glad I found you.”
Griffin tilts my chin up until our eyes meet. “I love you, Cat. I would do anything to keep you safe. That is my binding vow.”
“You’re everything to me.”
“If you had died…” He slowly shakes his head, his hot breath ragged on my fevered lips. The muscles in his shoulders tense, and a shudder runs through him. “Don’t ever scare me like that again.”
