I shake my head in disbelief. “Your daughter is unhinged.” “She’s the best, right?” Monty’s chest rumbles at my annoyance.

Crossing my arms, we mirror each other, both of us staring out at the field. “She named those the Max and Miller cookies. M&M.” “Hmm.” “What?” “Didn’t say anything.” “You hummed.” “A man’s allowed to hum.” “That was a suspicious hum.” “It was a normal hum. You’re just being paranoid and want to find ways to keep talking about my daughter.”

Kennedy takes a long drag of her cocktail. “My ex-fiancé is fucking my stepsister.” As if a record scratched, the whole room freezes in silence, all eyes on her. “Okay, you win,” Stevie says. “But you should probably expand on that.”

“Find your passion, Miller. Find what makes you excited to get up every morning and if it’s not this, walk away.”

“This is what I’m good at.” “Oh, you’re fucking brilliant at it. But you know what’s better than being the best at something you don’t love? Being mediocre at something you do.”

“How does it feel to know you’re settling down?” I asked. “I don’t like the term ‘settling down.’ I didn’t settle for anything. I simply stopped running when the two best boys I know caught me.”
