“You’ve got a cute kid.”
You’ve got a cute everything, is what I want to say in response.
“I know it’s weird to offer, but I can hold him if you wa—”
“No,” I snap.
“G...

“Oh, well that’s good. I mean, that’s not good. Or maybe it is good? Who am I to say? Goddamn, this elevator is taking forever.” She slaps a palm over her mouth, her eyes darting to Max. “I mean, gosh dang it.”
That finally makes me chuckle, a small grin sliding across my lips.
She softens a bit. “He do...

“Maybe he should loosen up every once in a while. He’s got a cute-ass kid and an even cuter smile when he shows it.” She lifts her Corona to me before chugging the rest and exiting the elevator. “Thanks for the ride, Baby Daddy. It was…interesting.”
“He’ll be on his hands and knees most of the time.” “As all men should be.”
And every Sunday evening, the two of them host family dinners with guests including his twin sister, Stevie, and her fiancé, Zanders, starting defenseman for Chicago’s NHL team. Zanders’ blue line mate, Rio, is a constant here, as are my son and I. The other guys sometimes bring a few of their teammates too and Isaiah tags along if he doesn’t have any other plans lined up.

Her lips press together, holding back a grin. “You keep talking like that, Kai, and I’ll be ditching the ‘baseball’ part and just be calling you ‘daddy.’”
to get caught up in pretending I still have the freedom to be that man.
She likes my son. My son likes her, and that makes me like her just a bit more.
My brother turns around to show off his butt, looking back at it. “This old thing?”
“Him?” Isaiah asks, throwing a thumb toward me. “He’s old as hell.”
“What can I say?” Miller yells to the field. “I’ve got a thing for older guys!” She punctuates that with an admiring whistle of her lips.
“You look like a kangaroo wearing him like that.”
A single brow lifts. “Mills, huh?”
The only guilt I have is due to my coach’s daughter occupying a bit too much of my brain space lately.
“Don’t need a horde of women.”
“No. I like watching you beat yourself up over wanting to look at me. It’s much more satisfying to know I piss you off than it would be to know I turn you on.”
“Well, much to my frustration you, Miller, are excellent at both.”
When I agreed to this, I didn’t realize I’d be as annoyed with the lack of solo time. But Kai should know, it doesn’t matter which of his teammates it is, I have no interest in anyone else here. There’s been a single dad on my mind far too much for me to have the brain space for anyone else.
“Oh my God! You’re impossible. You need to go. I’m not your problem to worry about.”
“Yes, the fuck you are.”
“Kai, I am not your problem.”
“Be my pr...
