“I know, Monty. I’ll figure it out
“You’ve got a cute kid.” You’ve got a cute everything, is what I want to say in response.
She stares right at me, not backing down. “Kai, I am not your problem.” My attention dips to her lips. “Be my problem.” Swallowing, she tilts her head, testing me. “Then do something to make me your problem.” Fuck me. I’m so frustratingly into this woman, so I do just that. I make her my problem.
“You should keep talking. You have a sexy voice, even when you’re talking about your childhood trauma.”
“Just enough to figure out you’re a big fucking deal.”
“Yes, Max!” The first cheer resounds behind me. “Good job, Max.” The smile on my face is splitting. “Two more big steps and you’re here.” God, my chest could burst from the amount of pride that’s flowing through me. He’s doing it. He’s really fucking doing it. Then his little feet, decked out in checkered Vans, take two more steps onto home plate, right into the cradle of my outstretched arms. The team goes nuts behind me.
“And while yes, I want to beg her to say, I’m not going to. We both know she can’t, and I don’t want her to feel obligated to me or to Max, but I am going to tell her she’s always got a home with us, and I just wanted to let you know before I do.”
