“I did, and I’m telling you this, not as her dad but as your friend. She will leave when the summer is over. I love my daughter to death, but she’s a runner and the last thing she wants is to get caught.”

She is cute. In the same way a tornado is cute. Or a pack of starved lions. Super cute.

“Does your boyfriend know what a flirt you are?”
“Oh, come on, Kai. You’re better than that. Be direct. Ask me if I’m single.”

My heart physically aches, but it’s not from the time away or the missed moments with my son. It’s because for the first time since Max came into my life, I feel like I could have it all.
I’m trying to hold it together, I really am, but all I can think about is climbing his giant body like a tree.
“You promised to help me find my balance in life. I thought I’d try to help you find your joy.”
Guy thighs…who would’ve known they were my new kryptonite?
There’s no denying it any longer; I want this girl more than I’ve wanted anything in my life.
I’m speechless.  I’m obsessed. I think I’m in trouble.
Why does the image of those two make my heart scream mine?
“Because it’s her dream, and I care about her too much to not help her chase it, even if that means I won’t be there when she gets everything she’s worked for.”
“I’d do anything for you, Miller.”
With my name on her back and my son in her arms, Miller stands in the center of the field, looking like mine.  She should be mine. Ours.
“You almost got it. One day I’ll get to hear you say my name. You’ll have to make sure your daddy records it for me when you do.”
“Mama.” Max grins, so proud of himself for saying a name I now realize he’s been trying to say for weeks. “Mama! Mama!”
“Miller,” he says, making sure my attention is on him. “If you ever decide to stop running and make a home…” His eyes are begging, pleading. “Make it with me.”
