“You drove all the way into the city?” She nods against my palm as it rests on her cheek. “You can’t miss his first steps.” Fucking hell.
Deal, but wait. Did you save my number in your phone? I’m honored, Miss Unattached. Yeah. Yeah. You know what this means, right? We’re in a committed relationship now. Omg. Am I your first? You popped my committed relationship cherry, Kennedy Kay. Double honored.
“I can’t believe I’m going to be in Ryan Shay’s wedding,” Rio sighs. “A dream come true for me, really.”
“Rio, you’re staying, yeah?” “Yes! And I’m sleeping in Ryan Shay’s bed.” “No, you’re not.” She turns to Kennedy and me. “I have two more guest rooms. You can each have one.”
After knocking on Ryan and Indy’s door, Rio is the one to answer. “I thought this was a girls’ night?” He pops his shoulders. “It is.”
It’s beautiful out here, golden hour in Chicago. The sky is all shades of orange and yellow, and the field is cast with a warm glow. But the woman next to me is all ice tonight, vastly contradictory to the bright light she’s brought into my life this summer.
“What I’m trying to say is that my brother deserves the world and for him, you are the world.”
“Why? Why would that be there? Why is it next to Max’s picture?” He doesn’t answer me, so I pull my attention away from the picture to find him staring at me and it isn’t until he has my full attention that he says, “Because when life or work gets too stressful, too overwhelming for me, I’m able to see who matters most. And that’s you, Miller.” He shakes his head. “And it’s in there because I’m so fucking in love with you, it’s too painful not to be able to see you every second of the day.”
“Kai,” I cry, fresh tears streaming down my face. “You can’t. We just…we got caught up in this. We had rules.” “Fuck your rules, Miller!” he bursts, pacing the hallway that leads to his room. “I’m not asking you to love me back.”
