Until that fire is mine every bleeding day.” My lip curled. “You do not offer your heart, so expect the same from me.” “As long as I get your fire. It speaks to me.” The tip of his nose brushed over my cheek. “So, I plan to make it mine.”
“In that moment, when she is the only one you want standing with you against a foe, that is when you will know you’ve fallen in love with your wife.”
But I remained lucid enough to catch a soft sigh, then, “Such an alluring nightmare.”
“Your folk know what I am. How will they ever see anything more?” “And what are you?” I hesitated. “A weapon. A bit of monstrous darkness.” On my final word, Jonas coated his eyes with glossy black. Such a shift from his bright green was startling. His palm cupped the side of my face, his body pressed me into the post of the bed. “Then be monstrous, Wife. If that is what you are, that is what I want you to be.”
My palm glided between her rising breasts, resting over her heart. The beat was erratic, fierce, heavy. I pressed her into me. “Because this frenzy in your heart has made mine do the same.”
“Be kind, be gentle, and be monstrous. I will want you every way.”
“The nightmare was terribly unrealistic, would you like to know why?” “Why is that?” “Because if I were to be taken from you, after being here even this short while, I would be as monstrous as I ever was until I found you again.”
Here, darkness was beautiful. Here, we schemed. Here, family didn’t mean blood. Here, was home.
“We didn’t feel there was a choice at the beginning, Skadi. But every day since, you’ve become the best choice I will ever make. I will never stop choosing you.”
“I do not hold you on the surface of my heart, you are in the deepest pieces where I keep my worst fears. To lose you would mean facing pain so wretched it would destroy me. I would not survive it. “On the day of our vows, my father told me you were my choice, no matter what brought us together, by taking vows I was making you my choice. He was right.” Jonas tilted my face toward him. “I will choose you every day, Wife.”
“The notion of not being vowed with Jonas Eriksson has become my nightmare. I know how to guard my heart, but not around him. I love him, Princess.”
“You are mine, Nightmare. I will devour worlds to the Nothing if they take me from you.”
Skadi was my daylight and nightfall. She was every moment in between.
“Be monstrous, Wife.”
Skadi promised to watch me burn if I tried to ignite the blaze in her soul, and she kept her word. From those first moments, she swallowed me whole, and I never wanted to be set free.
“Making you my wife was the best scheme I will ever think up, Fire. I am desperately in love with you, I hope you know.” “As am I.” I kissed him gently. “You are my sweetest nightmare.”
In the beginning I thought love that would start wars, that would draw a heart to kill, was only a thing of romantic fae tales. I never believed my own would unfold when a prince of nightmares dared love the monster in the mists.
