Gods, I hated him. He was one of the most entrancing men I’d ever seen.
Gods, why did she have to look as she did—like the first crystal star in the night, an untouchable jewel.
Never had the elven princess offered a glimpse she felt anything but repulsion for me, and here I was imagining what her bleeding hair might smell like if I leaned a little closer.
“I do not know what kings are like in your land, but in ours, we do not silence our queens.”
“He’s not touching her.”
His voice held a strange power—it chilled me from within, rendering me unmovable.
how could he break an empty heart?
“How well you keep secrets, Princess. There is a stunning blaze you keep buried inside you.”
“To unravel you piece by piece, until the flame inside you scorches through this façade you keep. Until that fire is mine every bleeding day.” My lip curled. “You do not offer your heart, so expect the same from me.” “As long as I get your fire. It speaks to me.” The tip of his nose brushed over my cheek. “So, I plan to make it mine.”
“You could always draw a blade against him. Before you know it, you might be taking vows.”
“How to snare a husband—threaten to kill him.”
“You do not know each other well, but find something that brightens her days. No matter what it is, seek to grant her that, simply to watch the joy fill her eyes.”
“Give her your trust in her strengths, her ideas, and learn to trust her with yourself.”
“Those secrets you think we don’t know are in there—they should belong to her now.”
“In that moment, when she is the only one you want standing with you against a foe, that is when you will know you’ve fallen in love with your wife.”
“Gods, can you not read about something for one day.” “That would be an awful day.”
The sinking sunlight burned at his back, casting his darkly clad shoulders in flames, like he was my beautiful destruction preparing to devour me.
“There’s my fire.”
“That fae did not touch you, but I saw your eyes, your reaction. Someone has touched you and not kindly.” I tugged on her bottom lip with my thumb. “I’ll be needing a name.”
“If he is still breathing, I would like to change that, Wife.”
She wanted her fire to remain doused, little did she know her husband had plans to fan the flames until we were both set ablaze.
“I’m bidding you farewell and good luck.” “I have no need of it. I’m already the grandest husband in all the lands.”
“Time will tell,” I went on, “for I do not yet know if my wife is pleased. Is that not the way of things? A satisfied wife makes for a pleasant life? If she is pleased, then I will be.”
“I hope you’ll forgive me.” “All so you can do the next infuriating thing?” “I guarantee it.”
“By the way, that was the first time you’ve called me by my name. I look forward to hearing it again and again, perhaps more breathless next time.”
The notion of you being seen by anyone else has me feeling rather violent.”
“Probably wise. You are irksome and I do like to murder irksome things.”
“I do not see you as a monster. I see you as my wife.”
“The corridors of this palace will be filled with cries of my name from your lips.”
“You flinch. You hide scars beneath ink. Who has harmed you?”
Who. Did. It?”
“I can’t take my eyes off you.” A cautious smile curved over her lips. “I hope it’s not because there is something on my face.”
“You rob me of breath, Fire.”
“Be kind, be gentle, and be monstrous. I will want you every way.”
“If I know you, I’ve no doubt my heart will be utterly yours to break.”
“Be gentle, be kind, and be nightmarish. I will want you every way.”
I’d learned soon enough it was better to freeze the heart than feel the agony of it breaking.
“Why did you never love, Jonas?” My words were breathless, hardly there as I stroked his velvet skin. “Because I was waiting for you, Fire.”
“Your mother would be ashamed to hear you speak.” “Wife, come now. You’ve met my mother and know she is partly to blame.”
“I’m in love with you.” Jonas pressed his forehead to mine. “I do not hold you on the surface of my heart, you are in the deepest pieces where I keep my worst fears. To lose you would mean facing pain so wretched it would destroy me. I would not survive it. Even if I was still breathing, I would no longer be me, and instead would become a cruel, violent, hopeless shell of the man I was.”
“You promised to unravel me, but you’ve woven yourself into every strand of my soul. I will never love anyone the way I love you. I am yours and that is an honor I will always fight to keep.”
“Never.” “You should.” “I refuse.” “What if I say so?” “I’ll refrain.” I paused. “Until I change your mind.” “Doubtful.” A grin spread over my lips. “Trying to get the last word, Fire?” Skadi hesitated. “Perhaps.” I nudged the horse into a slow trot, laughing. “I wish you luck.”
“The only reason I fear you, is because of how swiftly you had me on my knees. If you’ve stolen anything from me, it is my heart.”
“It would take the army of the gods to take me from you. Even then, I would find a way back to you.”
Skadi was my daylight and nightfall. She was every moment in between.
“Did he touch you beyond the shackles?” Skadi’s eyes flashed. “No.” “All I heard was yes.”
