“And you, Lanie Heart? How were you while I was away? Did you miss me?”
“Ah, I-I-I know the kids missed you very much.” “I’m sure they did, Lanie. However, I’m asking about you. Did you miss me?”
I scoot to the other side of the island, putting Tate between us. Like a tiger stalking his prey, he comes to my other side and turns my face to his. Leaning in, he whispers, “Lanie, did you miss me?”
“Remember, Mr. Boss Man, don’t fall in love with me.” I give him a saucy wink and am startled by the emotion I find in his eyes. “It might be too late for that, Lanie Heart. It just might be too late,” he growls, shaking his head.
“Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever felt more loved than I have these last couple of months.” I don’t look at him, I can’t, or I’ll break.
He rolls to his side, running his fingers through my hair. “I do, you know.”
“I love you, Lanie. I love you like I never imagined possible. When you hurt, I feel it deep in my soul. When you’re happy, I feel like I could float away. When you smile at me, I feel like the king of the goddamn castle.
right now, Lanes. I just want you to allow me to be a part of your life, so if or when you’re ready, we’ll be together forever. I have no doubts about that, Lanie. You’re it for me. I know I’m scaring you, that’s why I got you on this boat, so you can’t run away from me.” He laughs. “I’m kidding … sort of.” He winks, kisses me gently on the lips, and lays back down beside me.
