I was his queen and deserved the respect that came with the position, even from him.
“Straighten your crown, dear girl. Face those who don’t believe in you with pride in who you are.
But when you threatened free will, people fight back, and that threat carried our soldiers through.
“Protect me, but don’t suffocate me.”
“Find yourself, Raven. Don’t let others do it for you.”
I am whole on my own, I promised myself.
“I needed you to fight for yourself. You were relying on someone to fix your heart, but only your elements could do that for you.
I didn’t particularly like either of them anymore.
“I used to believe you put the stars in my sky, but then you burned them out.”
“I will use you to reach for things on high shelves, but that’ll be all I ever do,” I promised. “I have to stop relying on others to make me feel whole. I’ve searched for that my whole life and I can’t do it anymore.”
“You can be whole and still need people, Raven.”
“You always love me best in the dark,” I whispered. “Because you are my light.”
After I had her permission, that was it. I was done for.
“You said that I put the stars in your sky,” I whispered, “but you are my only star. My guiding star. I need you, Raven.”
“You do not get to treat me like this.
