“That’s why her hair is so big. It’s full of secrets.” GRETCHEN WEINER, MEAN GIRLS
Kelsey was already halfway up the steps, and the closer she got, the more I fucking forgot how to breathe.
“Declan Kingman.” She took my hand and the second her skin touched mine, I was a goner. “So not a knight at all, but a king among men.” I almost dropped to one knee and swore my fealty to her right then and there. I might have too if Wiener the Pooh hadn’t come tearing across the stage and jumped up, hitting me right in the junk.
“I don’t even need an alarm clock anymore,” Everett said. “Trixie’s louder than her pet rooster in the morning.”
“Imagine if we got to actually meet Kelsey? Oh my gawd. You should make a Bestie bracelet and put your number on it and give it to her. Like, what if you two went out? She’s single right now, you know?”
Chris could have Barney the Dinosaur on his playlist and Trixie would still think he was the bees’ knees. They were disgustingly cute and absolute couple goals.
Nobody got to think about her as anything but a woman with the voice of an angel. Except me.
Kelsey sang this love song about being cozy with the one you love, and I swear to god she was looking right at me. Why would she do that to my heart? I was dead now. Deceased. Dust.
“Declan Dumbass Kingman, if you don’t shoot your shot with Kelsey right this instant, I will take to social media and tell everyone in the world that you are a bigger wiener than Kelsey’s dog, Pooh. And I promise you, the Besties will be relentless in a shared quest to get you to ask her out. So you might as well do it now and save the universe a lot of time and effort.”
“I’ll bend over for you, if you bend over for me.” We were getting racy now, were we? Two could play at that game. “Mr. Kingman. I’m surprised. Are you offering to let me peg you?” Yep. That came out of my mouth. “I’ve never actually tried it, but if that’s what turns you on, my sweet songbird,” his voice was dripping with sensuality, and I found myself squirming, waiting to see what he’d say next, “I’d be game to check it out.”
“I haven’t done anything like that either. I’ve only read about it in smutty romance novels.” “Are you a big reader?” He changed the subject so easily, when I was still having naughty thoughts about what we could do to each other. “Who’s your favorite author? Favorite series? What are you reading now?”
But come on, we know it’s always about a girl.” “What’s always about a girl?” “Everything. Fat bottomed girls make the rocking world go round.” I laughed. “Yep, we sure do.”
“Do sacks have anything to do with balls?” Hayes snorted the sip of beer he’d just taken out his nose. I gave a little suck on my teeth and waggled my eyebrows at her. “Yes. Big balls need big sacks.” “I like her,” Everett said.
“Fuck it.” In less than a second, he crossed back to me, cupped my chin in his hand and wrapped his other arm around my waist. “Tell me right now if you don’t want this, Kelsey. Because if you don’t stop me, I’m going to kiss you, and I’m not going to regret it one little bit.”
I did not understand why everyone kept saying he was mean or grumpy. How had that moniker been foisted onto such a sweet cinnamon roll of a guy?
“I was built for carrying you to bed.”
“Sweetheart, when I make love to you, you will always come first, last, and a few times in between.”
“I have never in my life been skinny, honey. So we certainly aren’t skinny dipping.”
“I love you too, Kelsey Best. I’ve never felt this way about anyone, and I think it’s because my heart was waiting for you.”
“My ego isn’t fragile,” I assured him. “And neither is my love for her.”
