According to Kipp, the Moonfire Eclipse only happened every century and symbolised a great shift in the magic of their world, wherein light triumphed over darkness.
She’d cast the fucking thing into the seas, only to have it find her again hours later. No one could escape fate, or time.
strong of mind, strong of body, strong of heart.
That she and Wren came from a royal family of power-hungry traitors and shadow-lovers.
Wilder hesitated. When they’d been together, he’d been able to feel Thea’s power. The hum of it called to him like a song across the seas… but he hadn’t felt it for a long while now.
‘A favour from the Son of the Fox?’ Wilder raised a brow. ‘I’m flattered.’ ‘So you should be. You’ll be needing it before long, Warsword.’
She was always on about how the alignment of the sun, moon and world was a reminder of the interconnectedness of all things. How an eclipse is the lifting of the veil between our world and what’s next – how it gives us access to the gods, to the Furies themselves.’
Wilder Hawthorne reached for the lone piece of hair that had escaped her braid and tucked it behind her ear. ‘Thea…’ he murmured, his voice broken and hoarse.
The anger was there, but there was no sign of her storm powers, no spark of lightning calling out to him to dance with her. Where are you, Princess?
But the shadow-touched are those who fight against the curse when a reaper attempts to turn them. The result is a human with special abilities and wraith traits.
‘You take all the air.’ Hawthorne raked his bound hands through his hair and sighed. ‘It’s me who can’t breathe when I’m around you…’
‘Artos is responsible for the blight upon the midrealms. He’s the one letting the reapers and monsters through the Veil.’
‘But when it’s used on someone you love?’ he said. ‘There is nothing more powerful.’
‘I knew from the moment I first kissed you that I’d never think of another woman again. That you were it for me. Despite everything, that hasn’t changed. Nor will it.’
haven’t stopped burning for you,’ he growled. ‘And I never will.’
He looked at her as though she were the one thing he’d been starved of his whole life. ‘You’re still in love with me, Thea.’
‘If you need something to believe,’ he said, his blood heating as he closed the gap between them and hauled her body to his, ‘then believe this.’ He kissed her.
it’s from realms far beyond the Veil, from other races that have mastered magical objects in a way that we can’t even fathom. The name is in a language I can’t pronounce, but it’s a memory orb.
‘You’ll understand soon enough, son,’ his father said. ‘Delmira’s fall was not the end of things, boys. A reckoning is coming. And the midrealms will need all the help it can get when it arrives.’
‘Come find me at Thezmarr, little brother,’ he said. ‘We’ll be Warswords together.’
‘He loves you. That was never in any doubt. Not to us. I’ll wager that everything he does is for you.’
‘I told myself that it was enough,’ he murmured into her hair, his voice hoarse. ‘That I should be grateful for the time we had. It was more love than most people get in a lifetime. But the truth is, Thea… A thousand lifetimes with you wouldn’t be enough.’
A year had passed. A year was left.
‘The shadow-touched people are those who fight against the curse when a reaper attempts to turn them…’
She met Anya’s gaze, a storm of desperation, sorrow and regret. It was like looking into a mirror.
His lips were intoxicating. He tasted like fire and temptation, like home.
There’s still a lot that needs to be said between us, and I won’t fuck you again until you’re certain. Until you know there’s no coming back from this.’
Thea took a breath. ‘She told her best friend that you would need a warrior fiercer than her to withstand the force of you. Then she told me that I am that warrior, that you found that strength in me. She told me not to let you down.’
‘Tell me what you need,’ he said again. ‘You,’ she told him. ‘It’s always been you.’
‘You taste like you belong to me. You always have.’
‘To battle we go, Princess.’
‘I don’t want to go back,’ he said, more firmly this time. ‘Not back to what we once were. But I want to go forward, to what we could be.’
You’re more than your magic, Thea. You’re more than any one thing. And fuck anyone who says otherwise.’
He was looking at her as though he’d known her his entire life, as though she’d always been a part of him.
