‘Gods, I’ve missed you.’ ‘Have you?’ she whispered against his lips. ‘Every day…’ He rested his brow against hers, his chest rising and falling as he inhaled her scent. ‘Every fucking day.’
You claimed me long ago, Thea. You don’t get to say I’m not yours now.’
‘The Thea I knew would have questions.’ ‘The Thea you knew is dead.’
‘I knew from the moment I first kissed you that I’d never think of another woman again. That you were it for me. Despite everything, that hasn’t changed. Nor will it.’
‘One day you’ll trust me again,’
‘I have fought beside you. I have saved your life. I have saved a princess of the midrealms. I have killed shadow wraiths and cursed reef dwellers. I have come willingly, submitted to your chains, all for a chance to talk with you…’
‘Don’t you dare deny this,’
Thea understood exactly what Wilder Hawthorne had been doing for the last twelve months. He had fulfilled his vow to her. He had been training her.
‘He loves you. That was never in any doubt. Not to us. I’ll wager that everything he does is for you.’
Cal looked between them. ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’
‘I told myself that it was enough,’ he murmured into her hair, his voice hoarse. ‘That I should be grateful for the time we had. It was more love than most people get in a lifetime. But the truth is, Thea… A thousand lifetimes with you wouldn’t be enough.’
‘You’re sure about sex, about distraction. But not about me. About us.
‘What do you need, Princess?’
‘Tell me what you need,’ he said again. ‘You,’ she told him. ‘It’s always been you.’
‘Thea…’ he warned, about what, he wasn’t sure anymore.
‘You taste like you belong to me. You always have.’
‘I vouch for her,’ Wilder said.
‘I don’t think you understand the gravity of the situation,’ he told her. ‘Can you imagine the state of my plants? I bet Malik hasn’t watered a single fucking thing.’
He was looking at her as though he’d known her his entire life, as though she’d always been a part of him.
‘You know damn well what I want.’
‘I told you I loved you. That meant something, everything, to me.’
‘I have only cared for you more with each passing day.’
‘Thea… What measure of time is enough to be life-changing?’
‘I have thought about you every day since we’ve been apart,’
‘Let me taste you before I fuck you,’
‘I must be a really good fuck.’
‘Credit where credit’s due, Princess.’
He fucked her as he loved her: fierce, hard, unrelenting.
‘I am not as fearless as I once was,’ he admitted. ‘Not now I have something to lose.’
‘When I stand against the gods at the end of my days,’ he told her fiercely, ‘I will regret nothing. Not the lies I’ve told, nor the lives I’ve claimed or the rivers of blood I’ve spilt. I do not regret a single moment, because every one of them led me to you.’
