You can never really catch the night.”
On a wild impulse, Valeen fell forward from the last step and wrapped her arms around his neck. When their lips collided, his hands came free and gripped her waist, lifting her onto the edge of her chariot. They kissed and kissed, hands tangled in hair, tongues dancing tentatively. She felt like she was falling into an endless abyss that was him and she’d never escape.
He was water and she was a desert that craved it.
“You get to choose who you want to be. It doesn’t matter who your parents are, born with darkness or not. You always have a choice.”
“I don’t care about anything that happened anymore. If this life has shown me anything at all, it’s that you are the reason I breathe. I live in an eternal midnight, and you are my moon giving me light in darkness. I have no heart unless it’s in your hands, Valeen.”
She did love him. Once the tormentor of her soul and now the possessor of it.
Presco once told her that a soul match could be your best friend, someone you’re drawn to, a person you felt you knew for a long time before you ever met, but a soulmate was a love match of two flames that sparked life into the other and burned with the eternal flame. That’s what he was to her.
