“But I can always tell by a kiss if the couple will last. The early years are like a hot flame, burning and often flickering, but long marriages are made of those leftover embers, eternal, unquenchable and simmering.
“Did he hurt you?” She swallowed the lump in her throat and tears streamed down her cheeks. Fury and sadness warred inside, and her chest felt like it was splitting open. “More than I could ever say. He ruined me.”
