“Thane!” Hel was already there, cradling his bitten arm. A warm glow emitted from his palm. “You stay with me. You can’t leave me. We have plans, and I need you here. I lied before; you’re still my brother. Nothing you could ever do will change that.”

Varlett licked her bottom lip. “Why? Because you had everything I wanted. Immortality, might, love, devotion, the god of magic who I knew could give me power like I’d never dreamed.” Her reptilian eyes flicked to Hel. “I learned how to create illusions from your personal spell book that you stupidly left unguarded in your castle.” She turned back to Valeen. “You even had the heart of my betrothed, and now because you were foolish enough to make a deal with me, everything that happens to me, happens to you. If I die, so will you. If I get a scratch, so will you. I bet my life on you, the possessor of Soulender, and the fact that Hel and War would do anything to protect you, and when you become immortal again. So. Will. I.”

“I let you go the day you went away with him. Becoming War changed me, too.” He lowered his voice and whispered, “But a part of me will always love you.”

“Yes, Hel, the most wise and powerful god, I will marry you again.”

House of Night was still there waiting for her return, waiting for fate to call the elf, the queen, and the goddess home.

Hel took a half step in front of her, a protective move, and gripped her arm. It’s going to be alright, love. I won’t let him touch you or Katana. It took her a moment to realize who the male was and why Hel reacted that way. “Synick,” Hel said. “You’re supposed to be dead.”
