“Tell me, bastard-born Heir,” Tharix purred, his gaze locked on Max. “Did you request your own conception? Did you appeal to the stars for your creation? Or was life simply thrust upon you and presented as a gift no matter how hard living can so often be?” “I was born of love and handed into the arms of destiny, designed to help rule this kingdom by the stars themselves,” Max replied stiffly, a taste of pride and anger tainting the air as his emotions struck the walls surrounding us. “You aren’t even Fae. No one knows what the fuck you are, but it certainly isn’t natural.”
Gabriel swept over me, landing on my shoulders and leaning forward to speak with me. “Close call, Dante. Taken out by your own kill, what would the Oscura Wolves think of that?”
“Awoo.” Luca prodded me. “Do awoo. Do awoo.” “Not right now, buddy,” I breathed. “Awoo later.” “Awoo now.” “Awoo,” I whisper-howled. Luca’s little face screwed up, his mouth opening in a silent, devastated cry but the noise soon came pouring out, echoing around my bubble. “Shh, shh,” I urged, patting his back. “A-woo,” he pleaded through a sob.
“Wolfy!” Luca screamed, and my arms closed around him, my back turning to the Nymph as a second blow came. This time, the probes scraped down the length of my spine and I was thrown to my knees, my head bowing and teeth gritting through the pain. Luca’s little hand cupped my cheek, blood dripping onto his face from the wounds on mine. “I’ve got you. You’re going to survive this,” I said through my teeth, a promise I swore to keep.
“You awoo,” he said excitedly, clapping his little hands. “I did,” I said with a smirk, the rain pelting down on us and washing away the tinge of blood on our skin, my long hair a mess of wet strands. “Now give me your best awoo while I strap you back in place.” Luca started howling like a newly Emerged Wolf pup and I strapped him onto my chest again with vines, checking his helmet was secure before heading off through the trees.
Orion nodded, taking Luca wordlessly and the kid smiled up at him. “Fangs, Ori! Fangs!” Orion bared his fangs at Luca and he cheered in his arms, making me hope he wasn’t scarred for life by all the blood and death he’d just witnessed.
Orion petted my shoulder for a second and I glanced at him. “You did good, mutt,” he said quietly, and I swear he had only said it because I wasn’t able to reply. But I could damn well lick his face. I lunged for the lick, but he darted away with a burst of speed, tossing a knowing grin back at me before racing into battle. And I was right there at his back, ready to tear our foes apart.
I had earned this place. Their defiance was a snub to the very way of Fae. I had risen up and claimed my position upon this throne. I had crushed all those who tried to deny me. I had ended the Savage King himself. And now, after many long years of suffering the indignity of sharing my position at the top, I had finally claimed what was rightfully mine.
My stomach dropped and fear sliced through me like a knife forged of purest ice, blinding me and choking me all at once. I’d killed him; his blood had stained my hand, and I had left him to rot on the field of my victory like the failure he had turned out to be. There was no way that this was possible, no way at all, and yet… Darius smiled, a terrifying, victorious smile as he strode straight through the midst of my Dragons whose shock had forced them into inaction even as I watched my own death striding straight for me, right through The Veil and into my domain. “Well if it isn’t my dear,

“Salvation,” Tharix replied. “Perhaps.” “You want salvation?” Darius snarled at him. “Then start by making a path for us to get to it.” Tharix blinked at him, seeming to actually consider that, then the whole world fell to darkness and silence snuffed out everything.
“Stay with me,” she breathed. “Forever,” I promised, my heart beating furiously at the pain of all that was about to be lost.
Darkness fell and all I could see was the glitter of light within its depths and my sister’s bright green eyes. We embraced, because that was all there was left for us to do. To hold onto the other half of our soul, and pray The Veil stole us away together, placing us somewhere we would never part again.
To my surprise, Gabriel got to his feet and moved to embrace the mutt. “I owe you a debt,” he said seriously. “Luca’s life was in your hands and you kept him safe. Without your help I saw…” Gabriel grimaced and cut himself off. “The fate you kept him from will never be forgotten. Ask anything from me and it is yours.”
“I shall have a fine saddle and armour forged for him.” She turned to me with glee in her eyes. “And perhaps a blue collar to wear proudly too?” “No collar,” I said quickly, brushing my fingers over Shadow’s shoulder. “He’s seen enough chains. He’s free to go or to stay, it’s his choice. Always. I won’t take his freedom from him ever again.”
“Always am.” I tiptoed up to kiss him and his hand reached into my hair, his tongue pushing between my lips and deepening the kiss. Our love burned brighter, the Elysian Mate bond crying out in my veins, urging me nearer to him. My fingers clawed down his arms and his hand curled tightly in my hair, fisting it and yanking to make our lips part, keeping me close enough so he could talk directly to me. “Come straight to my office when you return.” “Did I just get detention?” I teased and his gaze glimmered wickedly.
“The Nymphs would know you are a queen without this dress. It’s right there in your eyes. You’re royal, your blood runs blue.” He lowered his head to kiss my ear, causing my pulse to riot. “Make them bow, beautiful.”
“Gift?” she demanded, and I fought back a squeal as I realised what he’d brought. I’d helped Orion make it just for her after I’d caught him trying to fashion a piece of string into a bracelet. It had been sort of pathetic, so I’d used earth magic to bring his vision to life instead. Orion slid it from his pocket, offering the gold chain-link bracelet to her which had glittering red gemstones dotted along it.
“Do you like it?” I asked. “He wanted it to match your necklace from Darius, but not in a way that was too obvious, you know?” “Yeah… it’s perfect. Tell him thanks, okay? I don’t want to do it, because he’ll be sarcastic and then I’ll be sarcastic, then we’ll fist bump or some shit, and I can’t deal with how uncomfortable it’ll all be.”
“Oh right, sorry, I thought it was something really weird, but now I know they just had sex through you, I completely understand,” I said, giving her a serious look as she led the way through the muttering Nymphs. “I think Orion’s dry humour might be contagious,” she said with a smirk. “You should really take something for that.”
“Is he still watching us?” Tory whispered after a minute. I glanced back, finding Igrit there on the path right behind us. “Ah!” I gasped. “I move quietly, don’t I?” he said excitedly. “Like a Nymph ninja – a Nymja I like to call it. Are you going to see the Oracles? They’re creepy. Mama said not to go out here on my own.”
“Then I shall please you first and decide second. That is the order of importance to such things,” I said, my lips twisting a little at the corner. I knew precisely what I would ask for. There was one territory left unconquered in my life, one which would ascend me from Fae to god. Immortality.
Tharix came with her, his eyes set on the water as if it fascinated him somehow. The boy was easily distracted of late, and I had in mind to turn my belt upon his back and strike some sense into him this very eve. He was a fine specimen for an Heir, but he could be vacant in ways, and I did not see the drive for domination in him that I had seen in Darius. No matter though. Such things could be taught, honed by discipline. He would learn his place in this world, and if he could not show his value, then I would replace him with another, finer creature.
I had learned from the lips of captured Fae that the Academy of Hydros was offering sanctuary to all kinds of water-based Orders. It was a specialist school for such creatures, shifters of the ocean, Sirens, Kelpies, Sharks, Calypsos, and even whispers of rare Water Dragons which would make fine additions to my Bonded.
I latched onto the wards, meaning to dissolve them all and reveal the academy, but the magic of them slammed into me all at once. I was thrown from my feet, skidding over the air platform on my backside, so dazed I didn’t manage to catch myself with magic before I went flying into the ocean.
Tharix stood there, and for a moment I swore a grin lifted his lips, those blank eyes gleaming with something akin to amusement. Though it was gone in the next blink, I wouldn’t let such a possibility lie. “Do you dare snigger at me, boy?!” I boomed, lunging for him and grabbing him by the throat. He was big, bigger than even me now. Somehow growing by the day as if he intended on dwarfing me entirely by the spring. His gaze dropped in deference. “I do not, Father,” he murmured, and I grasped his throat tighter so no more words could pass his lips.
His power was unmatched by any creature on Earth. He was the greatest being in existence, and I could not fathom the magic contained within his veins. It was clear to me that there was only one answer to his existence; I needed to find a way to possess this very power, trap and claim it for my own. For there could be no greater being in this world than me.
“Here, eat,” I said, using my water magic to carry the hamper to us before I lost myself in ideas of her flesh and forgot to take care of her the way I’d promised to. “Did you carry a picnic hamper all the way across campus for me like Little Red Riding Hood?” she laughed while I balanced the thing on the chair beside the tub and opened it up. I snorted. “Yeah, baby, I did. And what big eyes you’ve got, grandmama.” She laughed again, batting her lashes at me. “All the better to see your bullshit with, my dear.”
“So tell me,” she said, her eyes brightening as something occurred to her. “How did you enjoy making out with Max?” I snorted. “That was the fourth time I’ve been Siren Spelled by him. It wasn’t all that thrilling aside from the star yanking him away during it.” “How much tongue did he use?” she pushed as she finished the last of her nachos and I tossed the plate back into the hamper. “Sorry to disappoint you, baby, there was no tongue.” Her eyes narrowed. “Oh, come on, don’t lie to me. I’ve been trapped in his lust web before, I know how it goes.” “Lust web? Nah, Roxy there’s no lust in his

Roxy bit her lip, her eyes meeting mine before she took her hand from her pussy and flicked her fingers to cast magic. I’d half expected vines to come drag me down on top of her as she so often tried to do when I wouldn’t simply bow to her demands like this, but instead, she cast a cock out of ice, the thing as big as my own and sparkling faintly.
“I love you, Darius Vega,” Roxy said, her eyes falling closed as she settled herself against my chest where the pounding of my heart thumped against her ear. “I loved you first,” I told her, tightening my arm around her and letting my eyes shut too.
Hadley took her hand and the way he looked at her made me suddenly certain my little brother had fallen in love with a Capella, and my head was in a whirlwind of shit over that. There was something about them that called to the souls of Altairs apparently.
I chewed the inside of my cheek, trying to accept his words, but at the core of me, I’d believed this long before the war had started. “The truth is…I used to think that things would have been better if I hadn’t been around. If Lionel hadn’t had me to hold over you, you wouldn’t have had to go through what you did. You could have made your own choices. Maybe you never would have been Star Crossed-”
