Premise is basically a proposition leading to a provable conclusion. In other words, it is an assertion that the author makes that he must then prove during the course of telling the story. An example of this would be the infamous maxim “Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” An author could easily write a story in which this premise is proven by the way in which the story’s characters interact and resolve their desires.
