Epiphanies help the audience to empathize with the protagonist. It helps the viewer to care about the hero because we have all been there, surprised to discover that something we thought was true is not so, or vice versa. As big as epiphanies can be for the characters, especially for the hero, these frequently turn out to be just as important for viewers.
