BEYOND THE INCITING INCIDENT At this juncture, the story is still in its first movement. As the protagonist marches beyond the inciting incident toward the next story milestone, he should continue to be at the mercy of a host of unknown problems and obstacles. He will likely be locked in a struggle, both externally and internally, to figure out how to get to his goal. Meeting with one conflict after another makes the task all the more daunting. If your hero is fairly intelligent or street savvy, soon enough he will come to an understanding of how he can actually achieve his heart’s desire. But
