When you deal with a certain amount of pain or trauma, it leaves scars. Not visible ones, invisible scars underneath your skin and across your bones, marking you as grief’s prisoner for the rest of your days.
“Ah, using religion as an excuse for violence, how shocking.
I won’t throw myself at any male; they can throw themselves at me and I might consider it. Might.
“Humans usually have a very particular scent.” “And you, Amalia Roth, you don’t smell like a human,” he bursts into my mind, and I try to shove him out to no avail. “You smell like home.”
Oh gods, oh gods, oh gods. “When I taste you, it won’t be the Gods you cry out for, little liar,” he purrs.
I’ve been afraid for so long I don’t know how else to exist.
“Many beings in our world can harness a power called magyk, with the exception of humans. For some, their magyk manifests as the ability to change shapes, and some get mastery over elemental powers.”
“All magyk is either active or passive, never both. But Arkaydians are one of the only species ever known to have the ability to use both passive and active magyk at once. They—and you—are essentially magyk reservoirs. Because you’re constantly burning magyk off passively, you must store massive amounts to support the active use.”
“The only other known species with this quality are elves, Dragons, and imperial fae.
Imperial fae use magyk they shouldn’t. Somehow, whether from the Dragons they consume or through more sinister methods, imperial fae possess both types of magyk as well. But fae do not.”
“Arkaydians are in sync with nature. Your powers feed life and magyk back into the world, and your empathy means you have no ego.”
“We all have scars here, and the invisible ones are far worse.”
I’m tired of being judged—of the whispers and the sneers. I’m even more tired of being a coward and doing nothing about it. But I can deal with it. I can suck it up and bite my tongue. What I won’t deal with is anyone attacking my family.
“I will always be mad when someone hurts you, A gahrá, because according to my beast, we’re familiars.”
Maybe I'm not always the rock. Perhaps I'm the ocean, uncontrollable and wild, and the ones I love are the rocks, tethering me to shore.
You're in my soul, Amalia. I would wait a lifetime and then some if that's what you need."
"You would really wait for me?" The words are barely a whisper but both the man and the beast stare back at me. "I would wait an eternity for you, little spark."
"I see you for all that you are and all that you aren't. I see your heart and all of your broken pieces. I accept you just as you are."
“For all that you’ve given, and all that you have yet to give; for you, Amalia Roth, I will fight one last time,”
“I mark you for death and the darkest pits of hell. The Morrigyn is calling—your time is near. The Gods have not forgotten us, and neither will you. But you will remember what it is to fear.”
Separated and broken, but we are not alone. We are Dragon—we are the burning, righteous flame. And with the Right Hand of the Morrigyn, the last Arkaydian, we will have our freedom at last.
People love to tell stories, and the truth can be spun in many different ways.”
seeing him smile, hearing him laugh, makes me want to burn this world to the ground just so he'll do it again.
you have the biggest heart of anyone I've ever known, and there's nothing you won't do to protect the ones you love. So unleash that righteous fury on them, little spark. Make them fear."
You've protected everyone else around you for your entire life, haven't you? But who is there to protect you, Amalia? You deserve to be saved, too."
"In my language, A gahrá means 'My Beloved'."
"Everything that you are and that you aren’t; you are perfect, Amalia Roth. You are perfect and you are mine."
"I do not fear my own death, Dragon. I fear living in a world where the ones I love are dead."
"My heart. Ahavah means my heart in the language of my father’s kin. I learned it because my father called my mother Ahavah every single day."
“You are good, Amalia. A little bloodthirsty, a little prone to violence, but you are good. You defend the voiceless and love those who would normally go unloved and forgotten. When you love, A gahrá, you give all of yourself. You are a rarity,
“My name is Amalia Asteroth, daughter of Jhonu and Ophiya Asteroth, Scion of the House of Morrigyn, Guardian of Arkaydia, Gray Wytch of the Ulster Wald—" I pause and look back at Kydis, whose eyes are open and looking at me with such emotion it threatens to tear me in half as I add my newest title, "And friend to all Dragons."
