“Truthfully, I think it’s more the lack of any quality men in this town than the fact we aren’t hotties,” Lexie said. “We’re both rocking all the right things, and we’re well-read and educated to boot. It’s a them issue, not us.”
“Ouch,” I groaned. “What the shit? I think I broke my vagina.” Lexie went into a spiral of hysterical laughter. “You wish, babe. That would be the most exciting thing to happen to your vagina in years.” If only she was kidding. I wanted to be annoyed, but laughter kept spilling out from between my pursed lips, dispelling the notion that I was offended. “Someone break my vagina,” I begged the universe. “Is… is it re-really too much to ask f-for?” Laughter and drunkenness had me slurring and stuttering my words, and by the time I was done, we were both howling. Drunk chick style.
“I am Drager. A sun god from the realm of Risest, and I use this Earthly portal to strengthen myself. Your sun here on Earth has more power than mine, and with this safehold gathering and storing its energy for me, my land and fae grow into a power that cannot be defeated.”
“I might have… embedded… our language into your mind long ago,” she said with a shamed expression. “Since I occasionally slip into it without thinking. Figured it would be easier if it sounded like English to you. You even reply in faerie to me sometimes, and it still sounds like English to you.”
knew I should fear the sun god, and I did, but there were other emotions at play here too. He was the sexiest, scariest, most desirable being I’d ever seen. The fact that he was more inclined to kill me than fuck me and I still found him sexy was something to add to the list for therapy.
Tonight, was about surviving, not fucking a sun god. Judging on the size of him, he’d kill me in one… uh, blow. Yep. No blows for me. Shame.
He was every book boyfriend I’d ever dreamed of wrapped up in one package, and he’d probably be the reason I died today. If there was a walking red flag in a book, that was my man. Apparently, the same went for real life. Typical.
He looked grave. “It runs for the next thirty Earth days.” His eyes and expression darkened. “During that time, you belong to me, human. Mine to own, control, and destroy. You should start praying that your body can contain the force of mine, because there’s no other choice. It is time.”
This time it was the bond I’d shared with Lexie from almost the first moment we crashed into each other at a college pep rally, both of us trying to avoid the crowds. We’d laughed as we apologized, before we realized we were clutching the same fantasy novel that was currently taking the world by storm, filled with dragons and vampires, and a series of islands that trapped souls.
“Are you telling me they’re literal aliens? Dragon aliens who Superman’d their way into a faerie world?”
It’s rumored that they only have one true mate, one who can absorb their energy and carry their child. Knotting is the way they confirm it, even if they already feel the connection.”
“Can—” I choked, and forced more slow breaths in and out before continuing. “—can these dragons speak in your head?” I asked her. “Can they read our minds?” Holy embarrassment. Had Drager been in my head the entire time without telling me he could do that…? I would freaking kill him.
The Fallen were coming for us, and they looked pissed.
Nothing like a good ambush while washing my hair in the morning.
“What sorcery do you weave?” he growled, leaning down to press his lips to the skin of my neck. “What power do you hold over a god that I think about you even when you’re not near me?”
“We did kind of start… you know, but then he said again that he couldn’t figure out why I tempted him, so I pushed him away. Told him he needed to figure it out before we hooked up again.” Lexie’s eyes went super wide as she played with the edge of the towel near her hips. “He’s an a-hole, but you need to be careful, Morgs. He’s not used to being rejected or denied. You were totally right to do so, because you’re worth so much more than that, but I need you to stay alive for me. Maybe it’s best just to avoid him altogether for a while. He’ll hopefully forget you exist in a few months, and I’ll

Nothing said romance like an offering of your enemies’ heads. Wait, what?
Surely if Zahak thought I was his true mate, and possibly so did Drager, one of them would sense me in danger, right? There was no way a true mate bond would exist without a warning sign of your mate’s impending doom.
