March 2009 five-year-old Edgar Hernández ran a high fever. Doctors discovered he was infected with the H1N1 virus, Mexico soon announced 157 deaths from swine flu, and a global crisis management machine kicked into gear. After four days Edgar recovered, and Mexico eventually corrected its estimate to only 7 deaths. But once set in motion, the global crisis management machine was unstoppable.
