“Grieve tonight, but tomorrow is a new day. Wake up and say, “Screw him.” She smiled. “Or her. Either way, you’re better than them. And life will be better without them.”
The voice came from near my feet, and I looked down to see a chubby calico cat at my side. It was my familiar, whom I hadn’t seen in months. Probably a year. “Poa? What are you doing here?” I felt a change. Like you grew a pair of ovaries and got your head out of your butt.
Fantastic. My cat has the style of a ninety-year-old woman who collected haunted bric-a-brac.
He smiled and took the seat next to me, then immediately stood again. “I should have asked. Is this seat taken?” “Only if you sit there.”
“Because you look grumpy, and I want to turn that frown upside down.” I groaned. “Too much.” She grinned. “I know. It was over the top, but I thought it would annoy you, and I couldn’t help but try.”
We were also some of the few supernaturals who had fated mates, and the fact that my soul came alive whenever she was nearby made me pretty damned certain she was mine.
“I watched those damned builders flirt with you all afternoon, and I watched you flirt back. Which is your right, of course. But Isobel, I’m not made of steel.” The breath rushed out of me. “You were jealous?” The air around him vibrated. “I’ve wanted you since the moment I laid eyes on you, Isobel. You’re perfection. So yes, I was jealous.”
