I have been desperately, pathetically, feel-nothing-unless-she’s-in-the-room in love with Melody Woods for fourteen years.
“I’m heavy,” I warn. Zac rolls his eyes. “According to who? I could fit you in my pocket, Mel.”
“Now, be a good girl for Doctor Zac, yeah? I’ll make everything feel good.”
“Stop laughing, you ass. I’ve been crippled—” “By a chipmunk—”
“You—” I struggle for the right words. “You’re hitting on me. You realize that, right?” “I’ve been hitting on you all weekend. Thanks for finally noticing.”
“I’ll be your plaything. I’d wear the title like a badge of honor and eat you out on command.”
“I don’t understand how you’re single.” “I’ve never been single. I’ve been yours.”
“You’re a real catch, Zachary Porter.” Her eyes shine as she looks up at me, and I sweep her cheek with my thumb. “So, catch me.”
“You’re soaked and needy, aren’t you?”
“I am in love with you, Melody. I have been in love with you. And frankly, given the way the past fourteen years of my life have gone, I don’t see a way out of it. This it for me. You, with all your—your inability to start a conversation with a simple hello. The way you don’t give me an inch, make me work my ass off for the ghost of a smile. I will never stop working for it, working to earn you, because that’s what you deserve. And I’m so utterly and completely gone for you, anyway, that I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I weren’t.”
