“And it would mean a lot to me if you both made up. He’s my brother and you’re my… My Zac. And I hate that your friendship ended over me.” I’d end a lot more over her. Go scorched earth on anyone and anything, if she keeps calling me her Zac.
“I loved you so much back then. I know I took a break in the middle, but maybe that’s what I needed to really appreciate the way I love you now. The way you love me now.” Nothing. Nothing will top this. Ever.
“You quitting on me, Clo?” I mumble words that make no sense. Shake my head. “So, fucking take it.”
I miss her. She’s lying underneath me, heart beating right into my eardrum, and I miss her.
“I realize I should have said this before, but here goes: as much as I’d love to have Parker’s blessing, not having it won’t change a thing between us. I’ll still love you.” I quirk a smile when his shoulders visibly relax. “Even after my little brother kicks your ass.” Zac snorts. “You came so close to sticking the landing.”
“I’m Connor. Melly’s boyfr—” “Finish that sentence.”
“Did you just bark at him?” I snap at Connor. “Tell me you didn’t bark at him, you sick, narcissistic piece of
“Clover?” he says derisively. “She let her fuck buddy give her nicknames—” “Boyfriend,” I snap. “He’s my boyfriend. Get it right.”
Look at her again, I will rip your eyes out. Contact her again, I will snap your fingers. Touch her again, and I will end you. Do we understand each other?”
“Holy shit.” Brooks rounds Parker to stand at Zac’s side, watching Connor wipe the fresh cut on his lip. “Did you just throw down?”
Parker pats Connor on the back far harder than necessary. “I told you I wasn’t the scary one, asshole.”
“You know, I love it when you smile at me. I love it when you leave lip balm everywhere you think I’ll need it. But I really love it when you lose your mind over me. You’re just so good at it.”
“I mean, after ten years of holding senseless grudges… that’s it? You apologize and move on?” Zac gives me a funny look. “Would you rather we duel at dawn?”
Sure, it was pretty awkward explaining to people that I hadn’t, in fact, stolen Brooks Attwood’s girlfriend. Nor was this some kind of why choose situation.
“You’re going to ace this,” I tell her between kisses. “You’re smart and competent. You know football better than half my coaching staff, you’re funny, and you’re really, really pretty—” Melody draws back, huffing out a laugh. “I hope those last ones don’t factor into a job interview.” “Oh. I forgot I wasn’t just listing things I love about you.”
“We do it every Sunday anyway, don’t we? I help you with your playbook. You tell me how clever I am—honestly, it’s about time you paid me for it.
Get her happy. Keep her happy. Melody takes my playbook from me, staring down at the words. “This is all you wrote?” “It’s all that matters, Clover.”
“Clover, ten years ago, I tied shoelaces around our wrists, pretending it meant you were mine and I was yours. I wanted it to be that way so bad.” “It was,” she tells me. “It was that way. We just didn’t know it.”
