“Let me make this clear.” Janneth’s voice was cold and calm, belying the anger I knew she felt at being challenged in her own home. She crossed her arms over her slender, supermodel frame, and her stern glare caught me like a deer in the headlights. “That girl is not to be invited here ever again.” “I…” “No arguments,” Janneth said, and Caci bowed her head as though she was in as much trouble as me. “I know you’re in a hurry to leave for dinner, so I’ll let you be the one to explain this new rule to your… ‘friend’.” “Glori!” Merc shouted from outside. “I’ll tell her, Mother.” I averted my

That should have been our priority, but instead, we lingered here because of a human. The heir’s soft spot for the human girl irked me — one of several signs she would never measure up to the Last Queen or even the previous Elven Heir. The Last Queen had named Gloriana’s mother Nuala as her heir, a clever Elf with grace and a ruthless cunning that her daughter didn’t seem to possess. If Gloriana ever hoped to rule the Fae, she needed significant guidance.
“You’re right.” I forced the words out. “An heir with only one-fifth the queen’s magic might be weak indeed.” And that could explain the pathetic, inconsistent pull I sensed from her. Lyall was wise, and he was right. We needed to shape Gloriana into the queen we needed her to be instead of being disappointed with the clay we’d dug up. We had no other choice. The Fae needed her too much.
“You don’t have to hide that either,” he said in a low voice. I felt a tightening below my belt as I met his knowing gaze. He released me and stepped downslope, putting us eye to eye. “Among the Fae, pansexuality is very common. Especially among Nixies.” His mouth twitched up in a half-grin. “So I get it. I’m irresistible.”
It was like a punch to the gut. I realized belatedly I’d been afraid of losing control if he did kiss her. Which made no sense. I should have been pleased at her choosing her Nixie consort. Feeling protective over her — that was something I understood. I’d felt that way since before I’d even laid eyes on her. But this… this was something more.
