He would do whatever Brynleigh needed. Another long moment passed before she said, “Can we be quiet?” Her request was soft, and it went straight to his heart. He wished he could see her. Hold her. Embrace her until her grief passed. But he couldn’t. This, though, he could do. “Of course.” The rest of the date went by in contemplative, heavy silence.
He knew the moment she saw it because she inhaled sharply. “Oh, Ryker. A chess board.” His lips twitched as he reached over and picked up the matching one. “Not just any board. It’s part of a set. The pieces are holographic, and I thought we might…” “Play together?” She finished the sentence for him.
The Matron frowned. “There is no one else? It’s highly irregular—” “No.” His voice was firm. “She’s mine.”
“Yes, I will.” She rested her head on his shoulder and relaxed against him. “After all, you’re what I came here for.”
My feels are all jumbled and tangled cuz he fell for her truly but she is there to murder him and I dont want that cuz they are adorable and there's clearly more to his story and AHHHHHHHH!
The box holding Brynleigh’s emotions was fortified. She drew in a deep breath. “Losing is not an option. The only alternative to winning is death.” The ominous tenth rule rang through her head long after she’d hung up the phone and returned to her room. Zanri was right, and rule ten was clear: Ryker Waterborn had to die.
