She could tell by how he held himself that his body was dangerously honed, a weapon to be used, just like his smile.
“Look at me. Look around.” She gestured to the sprawling wilderness, surrounding them. “Know your audience when you’re making grand promises.” She couldn’t help herself, adding, “I thought fae were supposed to be good at this whole charm and negotiation thing.”
I’ve never met anyone like you. I want to know more about you, Rose, and the only way I can think to earn that is by giving a little of myself.”
“Ready?” he asked. Rose nodded as she fell into a dizzying mix of emotions: determination, attraction, amusement, and admiration flashed through their connection. As he went to untwine their hands, she caught a single image before he pulled away—her standing at the door to her island workshop.
“Suit yourself.” She decided to try another tactic. “I certainly don’t want to make you uncomfortable.” She glanced at him, and his eyes snapped to hers with barely restrained response to the challenge in her words. “I would not be uncomfortable sharing a bed with you, Rose.”
If only her biggest secret were her mixed fae heritage.
He’d kissed her as if he needed her, as if his life was colorless and dull without her, as if she was the answer to his prayer to the gods.
“This is real,” she whispered. It wasn’t a question.
“It’s been real for a while, Rose. I’ve just been waiting for you to catch up.” His lips quirked up in a smile as her eyes widened at his confession.
“Red sky at night, sailor’s delight,” Rose whispered as they were about to hit the shore at the Suden house.
Tomorrow’s problems would greet her with the sun, but tonight, tonight she’d enjoy one more night without the responsibility of a Compass Point.
