Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?
He held my gaze for less than a second. I saw him, and he saw me, and in that blink of time, something passed between us. A knowing. A need. A want. Electricity.
“Someone distracted me,” he said, tapping his knife on the mark. I lifted my gaze to his. “It was worth it.” “She must have been cute,” Bridget quipped from behind me. He smiled at me. “The most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen.”
“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. How you look when you’re naked. How you sound when you come. I’ve had a hard-on like a fucking fourteen-year-old since I walked in the door.” His nose slid along mine. “You’re a goddamn wonder.”
“You make me a lot of things, but nervous isn’t one of them.” My jaw drops, but then Felix pulls back with a one-sided grin and says, “I do get a little anxious on competition day, though.” “So,” I say, regrouping. “I don’t make you nervous, but oysters do.” He laughs and opens his door. “Exactly. Never underestimate a bivalve.”

I’m annoyed with everyone. Bridget. For dragging me to the Maritimes and making me cancel my meeting with Lillian. Felix. For kissing my hand. For wanting to find someone to build a future with here on the island. For the thumbs-up emoji he sent me and the year of silence that followed. Zach. For being smart. And myself. For being so very stupid.
“They’re pulled together,” Felix says, voice low, eyes latched on to mine. “They can’t help it.”
“I can show you how real I am.” “Right here?” His eyes flare. “Right now.” “You,” I say, “are indecent.” “Very.” “But you’re also the most thoughtful, steadfast, unreasonably attractive man I’ve ever met.” His lips twitch. “ ‘Unreasonably attractive’?” “Yes,” I say, nudging him with my toes. “It’s rude. I thought so our first night together.”
“Felix, I brought you here to tell you that you are in every one of my dreams. I came here to ask whether I’m in any of yours, too.”
“All of my dreams, Lucy. Every single one.”
“Since the first day we met, I think a piece of my heart has belonged to you. Every year, it just got bigger and bigger. I don’t know when it became more. Maybe when you put that pink package of butter in my hand. It could have been when we watched each other in the bathroom mirror. Or when you came to me that Thanksgiving. Or when I saw your shop. Or when you sent me that first book. Or when we went to the lighthouse at the end of this peninsula, and you looked like you’d never been happier to be anywhere or with anyone. “You.” He kisses me once. “I am so in love with you. Wildly. Deeply. Unrelentingly in love with you.”
