The workers need to understand that the focus is on work systems design, not individuals’ performance. To speak candidly, they must be free of fear. We often emphasize that we want to know what is really happening, so there is no need to be afraid to tell us everything, and that the exercise is based on a need to understand, not an interest in being punitive.
