imagine she goes home and crosses off the names of students she has successfully tormented. My name and the doll she sticks pins into are at the top of that list today.
“Well, I’ll let you go. Call me with some exciting news next time. You are boring an old woman.”
“There’s a reason we skate on ice, Summer. If I wanted to wear sneakers and walk in the woods, I would be a serial killer,”
“You don’t need blackmail to get me to do what you want, Summer.”
“You dance?” I ask when he lifts my hand onto his shoulder. “No,” he says. “But I want to with you.”
Aiden: Get home safe?
Summer: If I didn’t there would be cops at your place right now.
‘You have one life Aiden. It’s okay if you get a few bruises. They’ll make for good stories.’
Summer: What are you? A cop? Aiden: Kink? Summer: No. But if you’re down to dress up, a firefighter would do it for me. Aiden: I guess almost burning down your tenth-grade classroom has its perks. Summer: I regret telling you that.
“I don’t care about metaphorical eggs or what we should be doing. I already know what I want.”
“Think of it as exposure therapy.” “Great idea. Except you’re not my therapist, so it’s just torture.”
“Because I love you,” he says, and I freeze. “Anyone would know it. They only need one look at me when you walk into a room to see it. I love you, Summer.” His thumb strokes my cheek, and when he touches me, I feel like one of those lava cakes that oozes warm chocolate from its center. “I want to do everything with you, and I want you to do everything with me.” I blink away the tears. “Sounds possessive.” “It is.” He pulls me by my jacket and claims my lips. “You and me, Preston. That’s the only way I want it.”
“I don’t need years to realize how I feel about you. I already know, and I wanted it to be perfect, but then I just kept talking and—” She stops abruptly when she notices my expression, then takes my hands in hers. “I love you, Aiden.”
“You’re the only one I want. It was always going to be you, even if I never thought I would get with a hockey player. I mean, it was quite literally my last option. I probably should have chosen anyone else—”
“I love your patience and how ridiculously sweet and caring you are. The way you make me feel like what I want matters. I feel lost without you, Aiden.” She smiles wide. “I want to do everything with you, and I want you to do everything with me.”
“You worked as a server?” “At my grandma’s diner. Only for a summer when I was sixteen. She fired me pretty quick.” “Why? Did you start playing hockey with the breadsticks?” “I locked Eli in a freezer.”
Summer is my sun, and I’m the simple planet revolving in her orbit.
