James Baldwin once related how he returned home from school and his mother asked him whether his teacher was colored or white. After a pause he answered: “She is a little bit colored and a little bit white.”4 This is the dilemma of being a Negro in America. In physical as well as cultural terms every Negro is a little bit colored and a little bit white. In our search for identity we must recognize this dilemma.
