Freud and Adler would develop this theme in their theories of wishing and over-compensation. Their idea of the ego was an agency that needed to defend itself against knowing too much about the willing of the unconscious mind, and whose faculties could therefore best be described as defences, even if those defences enabled the psyche to pursue its true aims in disguise, as it were.
