“Because I’m pretty sure you checked me out, and I think you’re super hot. It’s ridiculous, and you definitely looked me up and down, but I’m a dork, and I tried hiding it even though you definitely already know, and I am like so not your type even a little bit, which is fine, we all have our types, but now I’m talking so much and cannot stop—oh my god, kill me.”
“This is the best date ever,” he said, lowering his face so his lips grazed my ear. “You’re a dream. This is a dream.”
She was everything in this moment. The biggest cheerleader I’d ever had? The most mature college athlete I’d ever talked to? Someone who I trusted?
“Can I touch you?” she whispered. My heart broke in two. She asked because she knew I struggled. Fuck, this woman was something else.
My whole stomach flipped over, like I went down a hill too fast in a car, and my heart slammed against my ribcage over and over. She likes me. She likes me. She likes me.
“Other than that, I fucking have a huge ass crush on you too?” I pulled her into a hug, kissing the top of her head. “Yeah, you made my day, Mack.
I had it bad for Mack. There was no other way about it. I had no idea what the fuck I was gonna do at the end of summer because one thing was certain—I was addicted to this girl.
“You seem less angry.” She stared at me a beat before leaning forward and pressing her lips against mine. “I know we’ll go our separate ways after this summer, but I promise I’d never lie to you or hurt you. While we’re together, I’ll take care of you.”
His trust for me had my eyes watering. This was huge for him, trusting me to not hurt him, to not betray or lie to him, and I would never take that for granted.
