IT’S SAID THAT THE WISTERIA VINE IS A SYMBOL OF IMMORTALITY.
“Do not make yourself small. Do not change yourself to suit him. Teach him how to treat you, and remember that you deserve everything this life has to offer.”
“Burn as brightly as the sun if you wish, Aris, but I will not look away.”
“I am not who you want, love. Remember that you despise me.”
“And you know that I despise you,” he echoed, a smile slanting his lips. “It’s a conundrum, and one that I fear we will have to tend to.”
“You gave the fox a stocking?” Blythe asked, incredulous. “Why wouldn’t I?” Aris’s neck retracted, as if he found the question distasteful. “Beasty is a part of this family.” “Beasty? That is what you chose to name her?” “I thought you’d appreciate having her named after you.”
Because the truth of it could no longer be ignored. For the second time in his life, Aris Dryden was falling in love. Only this time, he prayed that fate would be on his side.
“He will stay here,” he said as a veil of quiet befell them. “He could have the entire world in the palm of his hand if he wanted it, but he chooses confirmed happiness rather than the gamble. Fear will stop him from taking a risk, as it does with so many.” Blythe felt each word like a blow to her gut. “But he could still change his mind, couldn’t he?” “Why should he? He will have a content life here, and you said yourself how wonderful that can be.”
“Good, Sweetbrier.” His voice was a raw husk, the brogue of it thicker than she’d ever heard. “I want to be undone by you.”
“You’ve been much closer to her than I have,” Death said with a knowing look.
“Blythe is gone,” Death said, and for a moment Aris felt nothing. He did not breathe. Body numbed as the world began to fog around his vision until suddenly Signa was there. She smacked Death on the shoulder, slipping around his shadows. “You’re going to give him a heart attack,” she spat before turning to Aris. “Blythe isn’t dead. She’s just… gone.”
You are the girl who cannot die, and I am the one who will forever be reborn. Do not think you can escape me so easily.”
