Some of the best things in life aren’t meant to last forever. That’s why we cherish them when they happen. Like your favorite chocolate in a box. Or shooting stars. We don’t refuse to eat the sweet because once we do, it’ll be gone, or stop looking at the stars after one shoots by. We enjoy the moment because we know it’s worth living in.”
“I thank my lucky stars every day for her friendship.”
Truth be told, it almost felt like a part of me was programmed to love him. It had come to me so easily. As easy as breathing. There wasn’t a point in time that I could safely identify where he didn’t live in my memory.
“I’ll give you all my weekends, Claire Biggs,” His hand reached for mine, fingers entwining in that familiar way I treasured. “I’ll give you my weekdays, too.”
All smiles and laughter. Hiding his heartbreak. Hiding his pain. I wanted to save him from his past. I wanted to love him through it all. I just wanted him.
“You’re so beautiful,” I admitted because one, I had a problem keeping my mouth shut, and second, it was the truth. I’d never seen anything like her. “I swear you shine even in the darkness.”
What Johnny and Shannon had was permanent. They nurtured their relationship like it was of the greatest importance to both of them in equal measure.

Claire was my safe place.
I knew it was a front, his way of coping with stress, but the rest of the world found it hilarious, and the more they laughed, the more he performed for them, despite what it cost him.
Shannon had been born to be a Kavanagh.
“There’s only ever been you for me.”
“He wouldn’t do that to you, Claire. Not Gibs. His entire world revolves around you.”
“I’ve told you before, there’s only you for me, Claire-Bear.”
I loved her. Every part of me. With every bone in my body. Defective and all as I was. I couldn’t help it. It was instinctive. It was ever consuming. It was forever.

This boy was the boy. The boy my heart had been created to beat for. The boy I was made to love. It was effortless.
“I won’t apologize for what I did because I love you. Do you hear me? I love you, Gerard Gibson. I love the boy you were, and I love the man you’ve become.”
“And it’s you, Gerard. All paths lead to you.”
we’re a team. And if the whole world tries to take you on, then they have to take me on, too.”
