It wasn’t real, I didn’t truly feel that way, but I was a firm believer in faking it until you made it. After all, I would be dead without the sentiment.
The girl was everything to me, and that wasn’t me being dramatic. It was a fact.
“He’s not my nephew, you freak. He’s a hedgehog in hibernation in your mam’s hot press because you and my sister have issues with taking in strays.”
“Maybe if you shut your mouth every once in a while, I would have a chance to speak,” Patrick drawled,
he had a tattoo on his left rib cage with the word Resilience in italic font that was decorated with a feather in black, and then a tiny Care Bear on his right hipbone.
“Not my monkeys. Not my circus.”
“Despite my best efforts, I’ve grown regrettably attached to you.” Smirking, he added, “And all of your sixteen other personalities.”
“I’m always okay, Cap.”
“Who are we fighting, Gussie?”
“Don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s raining, Gussie.”
“I’m always okay.”
Oh wow. Maybe, Shannon wasn’t the lucky one. Maybe Aoife was.
and Joey was out front trying to sober Gerard up,
“I use them,” he replied. “Not everyone listens.”
“Always with the wisecracks.” “We’ll be dead for long enough,” I replied, gesturing around us. “Might as well crack the jokes while we’re still aboveground.”
Because my worst day was her last day.
“The right people will listen, and they’ll believe.”
“Some people are just plain evil.”
“Trauma sees no genders,”
“Call that number when you’re ready.”
“I’m seventeen now,” I bit out. “But I was seven when you raped me.”
“You took four years of my childhood from me, and I’ve been living in a prison in my mind every damn day of my life since.
“I’ve never felt safe around boys or men,” Shannon admitted, brow furrowing as she spoke. “For obvious reasons.” I winced. “Yeah.” “But I feel safe around Gibs,” she told me. “Aside from Johnny, he’s the only other boy whose hands I would willingly put my life in.”
“He knows who I am, don’t ya, Gibs? It’s alright, my old buddy. Cap’s here.”
“Do you want to be my best friend?” He shrugged. “Looks like I’m not getting out of this town anytime soon, so I might as well put down some roots.” “Me?” “Yeah, you.” “You want me to be your best friend?” He nodded again, and I could tell from just one interaction with him that he was sharp. This lad was nobody’s fool. He had clearly taken everyone’s measure and, for some strange reason, had decided that I was the best of a bad bunch.
“I’m always okay.”
“The way I see it is two innocent families were ruined by one monster,”
“I am so fucking humiliated and there’s nothing I can do about it. There’s no rewind button for me, Claire. I’m going to be tarred as a victim for the rest of my life.”
