Because I cared about the girl. I cared to the point where she distracted my day. I cared when her cat was sick. I cared when she cried. I cared when her mam ran out of her favorite brand of cereal, and she had to eat porridge. I cared so fucking much it was hard to find where she started and I ended.
The girl was everything to me, and that wasn’t me being dramatic. It was a fact. The thought of letting her down made me feel physically sick. The thought of any form of harm coming to her, be it emotional or physical, made me feel homicidal.
“Hurry up and get dressed. I’ll be in the toilet with my head in the bowl when you’re ready.”
The sky was blue outside. The birds were out. The sun was shining. It was another blissful morning. And I wanted to scream.
“Okay, new plan. Let’s build a world full of Octobers.” “Now that’s a world I want to live in,”
“What’s that saying for the word ‘fine,’ babe?” “Fucked up, insecure, neurotic and emotional.”
“You’re new, Cleary, so I’m going to give you a hall pass this time. But for future reference, we don’t talk to our girls like that. You got that?” “Yeah, I’ve got it.” Rude Boy’s face turned an even deeper shade of red. “Won’t happen again, Cap.” Oh boy, it was quite the power trip to be around Johnny Kavanagh. The boy oozed intensity. Lucky Shan.
“I told you Claire wouldn’t wait around forever.”
“Feelings make you a whole lot less concerned with how you feel in the moment than how she is feeling.”
“It’s like everything you used to care about switches into something deeper. Like your needs go on the back burner because your focus has switched to her.”
Shannon had been born to be a Kavanagh.
“I am so fucking scared of breaking this,” he surprised me by saying. “Of wrecking what we have.” He shook his head and exhaled a pained breath before saying, “I could sit on the fence for the rest of my life and still be nervous.”
Still, no matter the path I took, whether it was my body, heart, or mind in the driving seat, I always ended up at her door.
“But I’m telling you now, Gerard Gibson, that I’m not the girl for flings and whimsical fleeting feelings, so if you can’t give me one hundred percent, then you need to say it,”
“I thought you weren’t coming.” “And leave my baby hanging?” His tone was gentle and coaxing. “Not in this lifetime, sweetheart.”
Because his past was his prison, and our love was his getaway car.
“Gerard!” My walking heartbeat.
“You’re the best friend I’ve ever had, and I love the fucking bones of you, ya mad eejit.” He choked out a pained laugh. “And if you think this is going to chase me off, then you’ve another thing coming, fucker, because I’m never leaving you. Do ya hear me? Because you’re my Gibs.” “And you’re my Kav.”
“Love these boys with our whole hearts, and hope and pray that they’ll pick themselves back up and show us that they’re worth the pain. That they’re worth fighting for.”
“He’s been given so many reasons to hate the world, but it’s just not in his nature.”
“And I will stand up for all of your forms, baby, boy, or man! I will fight for you even when you can’t do it for yourself because that’s what best friends do.”
“It’s always been you, Claire-Bear.”
