My father always said that people are paper and memories are ink. Little did I know, my book would be dipped in tar, then ripped to shreds.
“What did we ever do to make you so happy?” “You exist, silly. That’s enough.” I sprawled in my seat, tap-tap-tapping my knee, bored to the max. “If we make you so happy, why do you always buy stuff to feel good?” “Art is not stuff.” He put his hand over mine to stop me from tapping my knee. “It’s a person’s soul poured into material. Souls are priceless, Zach. Try to protect yours any way you can.”
Marrying seemed like a total waste of time. You should only ever have one love of your life. Yourself. And, perhaps, a dog.
“Because you’re an octopus.” He said it conversationally. Like I wasn’t running, and he wasn’t chasing me. “Exceptionally smart. Hands everywhere. And venomous. Plus, female octopuses hurl shells at males that harass them.”
Zach’s dark and broody laughter rang behind me. He’s enjoying this. Sociopath. According to legend, Zach Sun never laughed. Barely ever cracked a smile. That he was a morose man, tough as nails, his heart full of rust. This was what cracked his façade? I’d get revenge on this prick if it was the last thing I did on Earth.
“So long, Lobster. And thanks for the fish.” “Lobster?” “Octopuses’ favorite snack.”
He cruised through life without being interrupted by pretending to be an idiot. Which was the most genius thing one could do.
“I always get what I want.” I darted my tongue out, swiping it over my lower lip. “And I want you like I’ve never wanted anything in my life.”
“For my next act…” I grabbed her hand and helped her up. “I’m going to burn down the world for you.”
“I had to work my magic, but I made it happen.” Silence. Then, she groaned, giggling. “I know. I cannot wait to ride this man. He’s so grumpy and hot. He’s defrosting, though. You should have seen him when we went venue hunting. Not a single woman managed to rip her gaze off of him. Once I show him how good I am in the sack, it’s game over for this brainiac.”
Dallas swatted his shoulder. “Why haven’t you confessed your love for me in public?” “I took a bullet for you in public.” He turned to Fae, nodding in my direction. “The only way he’ll be able to show his face in this town again is if you say yes.”
“I figured out why I love you.” Our noses touched. I nuzzled mine against hers as we tried to steady our breaths. “And why is that?” “You’re my home.” “I figured out why I love you,” I countered. “And why is that?” “You make my soul breathe fire, my beautiful dark desire.”
“I don’t even like Dallas,” I lie. She’s fine, I guess. For a human. Farrow grabs her backpack, flinging it over her shoulder. “You like me, though.” “I don’t like you, Farrow Ballantine. I’m fucking obsessed with
“Zach?” “Yes, Wife?” “Tell me something about the octopus.” “I’ll give you something better.” “Oh? What’s that?” “My father’s last words.” I freeze. He presses a kiss to my temple before leaning into my ear, whispering them for only me to hear. The pendants unite two souls. Fate knows what we don’t.
