Some people learn they never want children only after they have them;
It’s not my job to worry about the closed-off state of Jasper Davies even if my curiosity demands another say. But I learned my lesson about curiosity with a Davies man once before. I know better than to do it again.
But, hey, not my monkey, not my circus. Or not my pirate, not my ship, I suppose.
“You said you liked them,” I answer. “I do.” “Then, why wouldn’t I do something simple if you like it?”
But somehow, I feel like all the cookie smell in the world can’t overshadow my sudden sense of aimlessness and lacking.
At that, his lips pull up into a lopsided smile, and heat rises up my neck. I’m starting to believe Jasper saves his smiles for when they’ll be the most effective at melting my heart.
Wendy lets me exist. She lets me feel. She lets me inhale this nightmare and exhale it out into new moments that are different and happy.
“Because you smile more when she’s around,”
“Don’t apologize for my shortcomings, Wendy. It’s time for me to grow up.”
And my Wendy makes falling in love too easy.
