“I need to help your dad. Remember, don’t come out no matter what you hear. Not until the police are here. Listen for the sirens.”
“Never. I’m always with you. Always here.”
“I—she—she crashed into me on campus. New freshman. I didn’t realize it at first, but then the wind shifted. I scented her. Mad, she smelled like one of us.”
Five men and one woman. What a hell of a lucky woman she would be.
The scent of the girl was too pure, too enticing. Jasmine, dew, and us. Fuck. Knox had been right about one thing, the girl had to be one of our kind. And from the confusion on her face right now, she had no bloody idea.
Finding a mate changed everything. And not always for the better. Sometimes finding a mate meant having your whole world ripped out from under you.
The second our palms touched, it was as if lightning shot through me. That same phantom wave as when Knox had touched me the first time. My vision tunneled, and darkness tried to swallow me whole.
I gritted my teeth. My mate was over a decade younger than me and so beyond off-limits, it wasn’t even funny.
“Cáel,” Knox warned. But it was too late. The Viking came right into my space and hauled me into his arms, crushing me to his chest.
Throughout the class, Professor Brent’s eyes would land on me. Each time, they made me shiver, and not in a pleasant way. By the time the bell rang, my stomach was in knots. After this semester, I’d simply switch advisors and make sure I didn’t take another class with Brent. I just had to make it through this term.
The second her scent teased my nose, I was gone. That mix of jasmine and fresh dew. So innocent. So pure. So mine.
My fingers flew to my lips. They still burned. And some part of me knew that nothing would ever be the same.
“How long does it last?” I asked. Maddox’s jaw worked back and forth. “Until the bond is complete.”
“What do you think it would be like to have five men devoted to your every need?”
Maddox’s thumb stroked my face. “I’d take a blade for you a thousand times.” My eyes burned as my head swam. “Why?” “Because you matter.”
THEY CAN’T HIDE YOU FOREVER.
“An angel who will drag you right to hell,” Knox muttered as his hand grazed my ass.
“I still have my free will the last time I checked, and I don’t want a damned thing to do with you. So just go use one of these assholes as your own personal vibrator. But remember, none of them actually chose you either.”
The man just grinned. “But I wanted to meet the illusive Hayden.” His gaze skimmed over my body, making me shudder. “Even more beautiful in person. She’ll be quite the prize.” “Over my dead body,” Easton growled. “That can be arranged.” Hal’s mouth opened, and it was as if everything happened in slow motion. Gold fire shot out, hurtling toward Easton. I didn’t think. I simply moved. I threw myself at Easton, knocking him out of the way. But I wasn’t quite quick enough. Fire collided with my chest in a brutal blow. The agony was instant, taking me to my knees.
