A hint over five foot three on a good day. But this guy had to have a foot on me. His sandy brown hair was laced with natural gold highlights that spoke of lots of time in the sunshine. His green eyes were kissed with flecks of gold in a pattern that had me wanting to lean in a little closer to discover them all. And his angular jaw could’ve cut stone.
loved the subject, sure, but it was more. It was as though I thought if I learned medicine now, I could go back in time and save my mom and dad. I knew it was silly, but I needed to learn it. To understand how to heal the body. And if I couldn’t save them, at least I could save others.
A protectiveness surged somewhere deep. A push to go after her, to stay close.
But my gaze pulled back to Hayden. I didn’t like her in that line alone. And I really didn’t fucking like that the kid two spots behind her in line was checking out her ass. My back teeth ground together. I didn’t blame him. Hayden’s ass was stellar, but I still had the urge to rip his eyeballs from his head.
Your girl. I liked that too much. Something about it just sounded right.
“Where’s your coat or sweatshirt?” I started walking again. “I didn’t realize it would be this cold. It was warm yesterday.” Knox let out what almost sounded like a low growl and stormed over to a nearby table. Setting down his coffee and duffel, he pulled off his sweatshirt. I was talking one of those one-handed, grab-the-sweatshirt-from-behind-his-head kind of things.
His hands dropped away from my face, and then he pulled the sweatshirt over my head. “You need to get warm. And then you’re going to eat every bite of that muffin and drink all the hot chocolate.”
She turned those violet eyes to me. “I’d say it was nice to meet you, but I don’t make a habit of lying.” I grinned at her, but it was all teeth. So, the kitten had claws after all. “See you around.” “God, I hope not,” she mumbled as she headed down the stone path.
“What the fuck’s wrong with you?” “What’s wrong with me is that she’s our mate,” he snarled.
The library had always been a safe haven for me.
When our kind found their mate, they had a deeply ingrained need to make sure their mate was safe and cared for. To provide for them in every way imaginable. Food was just the tip of the iceberg.
“We have to tell Cáel. He’s going to lose it.” I winced. Cáel wasn’t altogether stable. He’d been too broken for that. And I wasn’t sure what a mate bond would do to him. He might gut every man that looked at Hayden. What a hell of a mess that would be to clean up.
Knox’s fingers tapped the screen. “You shouldn’t walk back to the dorm alone if it’s dark. I can give you a ride.” “You don’t have to—” A low growl had my gaze snapping to Cáel. “It’s not safe,” he gritted out.
One second, he was in the booth, and the next, he was being hauled into the air by his throat. “Did. You. Touch. Her?” Cáel snarled, baring his teeth.
Cáel’s fingers tightened a fraction. “Hayden’s under my protection. If any of you even look her way, I’ll pull your spleen through your nose.”
Easton’s gaze met the table in front of me. “Remember what Cáel said. We might not be around to stop him next time.”
It wouldn’t matter if Hayden never shifted. She’d still be the most important being on the planet to me. But I didn’t think that would be a problem. “I sensed power in her. Immense strength.” Knox’s head jerked in my direction. “You did?” I nodded. “She’s an incredibly powerful dragon. She just doesn’t know it.”
“Nothing can happen to you, Little One.” Those words curled around me, comforting somehow. I hugged Cáel back, sensing he needed it. “Nothing’s going to happen to me.” “No,” he growled. “It’s not. Because I won’t let it.”
There were five different jackets laid out on the mattress. One looked like it would’ve prepared me for an excursion to the Arctic. Another was slightly thinner but still made of that puffy down material. The third was a bit more fashion-forward. It was army green but lined with some sort of insulation I knew would make it super warm. The fourth was a rain jacket that looked like it would protect me from torrential downpours. The fifth had an invisible fist squeezing my heart. It was a gorgeous black leather motorcycle jacket. My fingers skimmed over the fabric. It was the softest thing I’d

“You’re different.” Knox said it as though it were an undeniable truth. “Different how?” I asked. He cast me a quick smile. “You belong with us.”
“Easton’s just a cranky fucker.” “Mr. Grumpy Cat.” He barked out a laugh. “Mr. Grumpy Cat.”
Easton’s green eyes narrowed on me. “Hayden,” he clipped. “Grumpy Cat,” I shot back. His eyebrows flew toward his hairline. “What did you just call me?” I met his stare dead on. “You look like that meme of the cat who’s in a perpetual bad mood.” Easton’s jaw worked back and forth. “I don’t look like a cat.”
Our mate.
Our girl had fire. Good. She’d need it. “It’s okay, Little Flame. Plenty of time for me to find out everything about you.”
Hayden’s head tipped back, the ice pack falling away. “You care about me?” I stared into those violet eyes. “I’d do anything for you.” She swallowed hard. “They were going to hurt me.” A muscle twitched along my jaw. “No one is going to touch you. Never again.”
“Are you drug dealers? Or in a cult?” His eyes flared. “You think we deal drugs?” “What am I supposed to think? You have a ridiculous amount of money, you run some sort of underground club, and people want to kill you.” Cáel choked on something that wasn’t quite a laugh. “She has a point. It wasn’t a bad guess.”
Knox got in the front and scowled through the rearview mirror. “What am I? Your chauffeur?” Cáel grinned at him, but it resembled more of a rabid hyena. “Want me to get you one of those little hats?” “You try to put me in a hat, and I’ll shave all those stupid fucking braids off your head,” Knox shot back.
Cillian straightened, tipping his head back, and his hands lifted to my face. “You’re everything to me, Hayden. Nothing can happen to you.”
A guy in front of us turned around, grinning. “Dude, when you’re done with her, I wouldn’t mind taking her for a ride.” Easton was out of his seat in a flash, throwing the guy to the floor and pressing his forearm to his throat. “If you even look at her again, I’ll break every bone in your body. You’ll be pissing out a tube and eating through one, too.”
