Atlas: If you’ve forgotten who Atlas is… No, there’s no way you did. The Sun King. Master manipulator. Got Lor out of Nostraza to compete in the Trials for some mysterious reason that maybe you’ll find out in this book. Not blond despite everyone comparing him to a certain High Lord of Spring (IYKYK).
“Oh fuck. Don’t tell me that you two are…” He curls his lip. “Watch it,” I snarl, and Gabriel’s eyebrows shoot up. “Don’t you find her a little feral? Abrasive? Mouthy?” I lean back, crossing my legs, offering him a lazy grin. She’s feral and difficult and makes me want to tear my hair out sometimes. All the time. It’s what makes me so insane. “Yes. Very.”
“It’s no use,” I say. “I know you won’t really hurt me.” Those last words sit between us as Nadir’s jaw tics. I know it’s true. It’s something I’ve understood for a while. That no matter what happens, he wouldn’t ever willingly hurt me. He doesn’t argue, instead running a frustrated hand through his hair. “He would hurt me, though,” Tristan says, and Nadir’s expression morphs from serious to gleeful.
What would that be like? I’ve spent so many years pretending not to feel anything someone could use against me.
I wonder how long this feeling of living on the edge of nothing will persist. When will this feel solid and not like an illusion about to be pulled out from under us?
The man whose father killed my parents is my fated mate, destined by Zerra. Who has apparently been made for me. That’s no surprise, though. I think I knew that from the moment I threw my champagne at him.
I cast another quick glance at Nadir and decide I’m raising the stakes so high they’ll become a black dot disappearing into the sky. I place my glass on the table and then slide onto Declan’s lap before wrapping my scarf around the back of his neck and leaning in.
“Lor! When are you going to get it through your head that I am totally, completely fucking in love with you!” She attempts to retreat, but I take another step until she’s backed against the window. “You’re all I think about. I’ve never felt like this about anyone, and I’d do anything for you. You’ve become my air and my blood and my only reason to exist. I love you, Lor. I love you so much it makes my heart feel ready to burst.”
She’s not just my mate. Not just the woman I’ve fallen in love with. She is every star in the sky and every wish I’ve ever wanted. This moment right now will define every single one that comes after it from now until eternity. I feel it in my bones. This isn’t just true love. Lor has a destiny to fulfill, and I am sure that I am a part of it.
When you’ve been treated like nothing for most of your life, it’s easy to forget that you’re something.
A voice comes from the door, and all three of us look over to find Gabriel. He storms into the room and stops. There’s a wild light in his eyes, and his jaw is set hard enough to crack through marble. “You wanted something that would embarrass Atlas and tarnish his name? I know a secret that not only will get everyone’s attention but will change Aphelion forever.” And then he clutches his chest with a grunt and collapses to the floor.
